Minuteman Health testifies before MA state legislature

Supports bill to protect its members from unexpected and costly medical bills

Boston, MA—Minuteman Health (www.minutemanhealth.org) announced that a company spokesperson testified in front of the Joint Committee on Financial Services this morning in support of a Senate bill which, if passed, will focus on curtailing the negative effects of surprise and balance billing by health care providers.

“Minuteman Health supports any effort that will help protect our members from unexpected and exorbitant medical bills,” said Julie Myers, Regulatory Counsel for Minuteman. “Both surprise and balance bills can be very damaging to the financial health of our members and we will continue to work collaboratively with our provider partners and the MA legislature on finding solutions to protect them and all healthcare consumers in the future.”

Senate Bill 522, if passed, would establish a standard “non-participating provider rate” that out-of-network providers must accept if a member inadvertently receives services from those providers. In addition, providers would be obligated to perform an eligibility check and obtain clear consent from a patient before providing services and exposing members to high out-of-network charges. “Minuteman Health’s mission of providing our members with low-cost, high-quality care is made possible by the strength of our select In-Plan Provider Network,” said Susan Brown, General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer of Minuteman. “While we always stress the importance of staying In-Plan to our members, we want to make sure they are protected from surprise bills if they receive services from an out-of-network provider.”
